What is DOD Directive 8570.1?

Department of Defense

The U.S. Department of Defense recognizes CompTIA certifications in its technical and management tracks for information assurance technicians and managers under DoD Directive 8570.1M.

In today's environment of emerging security threats, the U.S. Department of Defense has recognized the critical need for highly-qualified, experienced information assurance personnel. To ensure a knowledgeable and skilled workforce the DoD has taken the necessary steps to develop a directive that involves the credentialing and continuing education of all DoD employees with privileged access to DoD information systems.

Specifically, the U.S. Department of Defense Directive 8570.1, signed in August of 2004, requires every full- and part-time military service member, defense contractor, civilian and foreign employee with privileged access to a DoD system, regardless of job series or occupational specialty, to obtain a commercial certification credential that has been accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

CompTIA certifications are internationally recognized and vendor-neutral. We provide the CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Security+ Training Classes.

They are effective foundational-level certifications that pave the way to earning higher-level and vendor-specific certifications.

Technical 1 requirement: met by CompTIA A+ or CompTIA Network+

CompTIA Network+ Certification

Even in a troubled economy, most businesses asked were planning to maintain or increase their investment in security.

CompTIA Security+ is an international, vendor-neutral certification that proves competency in system security, network infrastructure, access control and organizational security. Major organizations that employ CompTIA Security+ certified staff include Booz Allen Hamilton, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Motorola, Symantec, Telstra, Hitachi, Ricoh, Lockheed Martin, Unisys, Hilton Hotels Corp., General Mills, the U.S. Navy, Army, Air Force and Marines.
Although not a prerequisite, it is recommended that CompTIA Security+ candidates have at least two years of technical networking experience, with an emphasis on security. The CompTIA Network+ certification is also recommended.
